EN 81-20 / EN 81-50 general information

This standard specifies safety rules for passenger and goods lifts. The aim is to prevent accidents during daily operation, maintenance work and in emergencies.

To facilitate inspections and maintenance, each system must have a permanently installed, easy-to-use inspection control system. This can be located in the following places:

on the roof of the cabin,
in the shaft pit,
in the cabin itself (if a procedure from the inside is necessary),
on a platform (if the cabin needs to be moved from there).

Previously, the number of inspection control stations was limited to two – this restriction no longer applies.

Facilities

Inspection control/maintenance control: It must be operable in the immediate vicinity (max. 30 cm) of a protected location. Every lift must have a maintenance mode (often called ‘inspection control’): movement of the cabin only with a ‘dead man’s switch’ (must be held down), reduced speed, control from the cabin roof or shaft pit.
STOP switch: This must be easily accessible and must be no more than 1 m away from the entry point. It can also be integrated into the inspection control system, provided that the distance rule is observed.
Socket: For connecting tools or testing devices.

Inspection control / Inspection box / Lift maintenance box

The inspection control is used to move the lift directly from the cabin roof during maintenance or repair work. The lift can only be moved up or down. When this control is activated, the normal lift control no longer functions. The doors cannot be opened or closed automatically either. The lift can only be operated as long as the respective button is held down (dead man’s control). For safety reasons, there is also a large red emergency stop button that can be used to stop the lift immediately.
